Hello and welcome!
I’m Chuyi Wang, a researcher, educator, and lifelong learner with a passion for exploring the intersections between language, mind, and culture.
Education
I hold a PhD in Language Education, where I explored reasons for demotivation in learning Chinese download my PhD thesis here: https://centaur.reading.ac.uk/112916/. I am currently pursuing an MSc in Psycholinguistics at the University of Edinburgh, deepening my understanding of language processing, brain mechanisms, and developmental cognition. Throughout my academic journey, I’ve been fascinated by how our brains learn languages and how individual characteristics, such as bilingualism or dyslexia, shape this process.
Work Experience
For nearly a decade, I have taught Mandarin Chinese and Translation into Chinese at higher and further education institutions in Beijing and in the UK, working with learners from beginner to advanced levels. My teaching experience spans credit-bearing course teaching, general public teaching, curriculum design, and assessment development, including work on international exams like HSK. I am passionate about creating inclusive classrooms that respect and support neurodiverse and multilingual learners.
Beyond teaching, I am involved in research projects like Theirworld Edinburgh Birth Cohort (TEBC), where I contribute to studies exploring early brain development and language learning in young children, and have led initiatives such as language partnership programmes to foster intercultural learning and peer collaboration. I have also contributed to teacher CPD workshops at UCL IOE, delivered Chinese cultural workshops in Confucius Institutes and city councils, and worked as an interpreter, supporting delegations of Chinese headteachers visiting English schools. Additionally, I’ve held roles as an art editor and a student mentor, all of which have enriched my ability to communicate across cultures, support learner development, and engage with wider educational communities beyond the classroom.
Current Projects & Interests
Presently, I am focusing on:
Neurodivergent experiences in language learning — understanding challenges and strengths.
Third language (L3) acquisition and how prior languages influence learning.
Visual Word Form Area (VWFA) development in young bilingual readers.
Creative projects, including documentary making, interviewing, filming, storytelling, and public engagement.
Beyond the academic world I also enjoy observing life and culture, telling stories through words and images. I love photography, writing, cooking, and exploring cultures through travel. I find deep meaning in noticing the little things that connect us as humans. I believe in the power of stories — visual and written — to connect people across cultures and experiences. My dream is to bring together science, education, and creative storytelling to make complex ideas accessible and impactful.
